I have always believed the greatest resource we have as an academic medical center is the passion, heart and talent our employees bring to their pursuit of enhancing the health of those we serve. I am so proud that the employees of KU Medical Center have chosen to make a difference. In so many generous ways, you truly demonstrate that KU Cares.

I want to thank you for participating in last year’s 8 In ’08 volunteer campaign. Our volunteers gave approximately 2,900 hours of their time and talents to serve those in need in our community, equating to almost $50,000 of in-kind services.

On the heels of last year’s success, I challenge all students, faculty and staff to complete 10 hours of community service as we begin this year’s KU Cares campaign: Donate your time in 2009.

Throughout the year we will continue to promote ways in which your volunteer service can make a difference. For instance, you could mentor a child by signing up as a YouthFriends volunteer, form a team and take part in the 2009 Heart Walk on May 30th at Theis Park near the Country Club Plaza, or become a house captain for Christmas In October and help provide needed home repairs for Wyandotte County homeowners who lack the resources to make the repairs themselves. The opportunities for you to help are wide-ranging and unlimited.

To learn how you can get involved, click on the Volunteer Opportunities tab for more detailed information or contact Paula Baum, Community Relations Manager at 913-588-1017 or pbaum@kumc.edu.

I appreciate all that you do to demonstrate that KU Cares.

Thank you,

Barbara Atkinson, MD
Executive Vice Chancellor
Executive Dean, KU School of Medicine
